Just minutes after the BFS awards ceremony this year a Fantasycon member came up to me and said he was surprised Murky Depths had not even been shortlisted. OK, so Vincent Chong, who had illustrated the Issue #4 cover (and it's his favourite piece to date) was again awarded Best Artist, but there was no mention of Murky Depths. I forgot to ask the questioner if he had put us forward for a nomination. Unfortunately if you don't get your nominations in quickly then your name doesn't go on the website - and while this doesn't stop BFS members nominating additional publishers, artists, writers, etc. they aren't going to appear on the BFS site so there is a natural biase to vote on those already there.
So, what categories could Murky Depths be included in? Well, don't forget it's not just about Murky Depths but the contributors too, so these all qualify in my mind: Best Novel (The August Derleth Fantasy Award)- for Killing Kiss, by Sam Stone; Best Small Press; Best Short Fiction; Best Anthology; Best Artist; and possibly even Best Collection.
You have to be a BFS member to vote though, so if you're not already a member join today and start hassling the BFS team about next year's nominations.
