I'm a John Courtenay Grimwood fan but I'd go for "Paston, Kentucky" by Jonathan C Gillespie.

I really liked the tone of Today Is Not by Michael Sellars so I'd put that at the top of my list.

My own favourite from the first issue was '... Beamish Boy', with Anne Stringer's tale coming in a close second.
